What is Play Therapy?

Why choose Play Therapy?

Does your child struggle with managing emotions, behavior, hyperactivity, friendship difficulties? Play Therapy is an opportunity for a child or young person ( age 4-18) to learn about themselves and understand more about the world and the people in it.

Play therapy can support a wide range of emotional and behavioural difficulties. It is particularly effective in helping children experiencing anxiety, trauma, bereavement and low mood. Through this specialist play, young people are supported to express feelings safely and develop emotional regulation skills.

Play therapy can also benefit children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as those struggling with anger, challenging behaviour or difficulties at school.

Children’s play therapy may also provide valuable support during significant life changes, including parental separation or divorce, experiences of domestic abuse, hospitalisation, or living in foster care or other care settings.

I provide this play therapy in Newcastle upon Tyne and the surrounding Northumberland area. .

Why play?

Play is at the heart of childhood.
It is how children explore, learn, and make sense of the world. Through play, they experiment, practice new skills, and blend imagination with reality.

For children, play is a natural language. It allows them to express what they may not have the words for — turning feelings, thoughts, and experiences into action and story.

Play also gives children a safe space to explore emotions, try out solutions, and discover healthy ways of coping with challenges. This not only supports their physical and cognitive growth but also nurtures wellbeing and happiness.

How does it work?

Play Therapy offers children a safe and confidential space to express themselves through play. Sessions are child-led, non-judgemental, and supportive, allowing them to explore feelings and experiences at their own pace. I am trained to support the child through their process using both directive and non-directive approaches; this is an holistic integrative model of play therapy using the creative arts which is evidence based. Children attend one 40-minute session each week for an agreed period (understood through assessment)  with regular reviews to support progress and a safe, planned ending.
